After Jesus feeds the 5000 many people follow him claiming that they want to hear more of his teachings. Yet, Jesus is not fooled, he knows that they just want another free meal. He says to them “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” John 6:26-27. Have you ever known someone like this; someone who suddenly appears in your life when you have something to offer them but seem to disappear when life becomes too complicated? I would guess most people could relate. Here is a harder question; have you ever been that person? Have you ever come into someone’s life just for the parties, the dinners out, the invite to a ski lodge and then disconnected with them when they might have needed your help? And now let’s dig a little deeper, have you ever had a relationship like this with Jesus? Do you only turn to Christ for what he can do for you but when he calls you to action do you turn away? This Lenten season, pray to Jesus for the bread of life, the bread that is eternal and can satisfy all your needs.
