In today’s reading a great deal happens. The religious leaders question Jesus and begin their plans for his arrest. Meanwhile, Jesus tries, in vain, to explain to his disciples what is about to happen to him. Amazingly, Jesus is not distracted by his role in God’s plan, but rather continues to heal and teach. We also hear about a time when Jesus visited some of his friends, Mary and Martha. This short scene caught the attention of writer Joanna Weaver because it highlights the need for intimacy with God. Below is a quote from her book, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World.

“The thing we need to understand is that God did not choose to ‘use’ us.

We are not spiritual Oompa-Loopmas in some cosmic chocolate factory

working day and night to churn out a smoother, better-tasting Christianity.

We were not created to fill some egotistical need God has for praise —

the angels forever encircle His throne with worship.

We are not some celestial science project;

laboratory mice let loose to see how they interact.

No, the Bible makes it clear that God created us because

He longs to have fellowship with us. Our Father longs to pour His very life

into us, to give us an inheritance and a share in His divine nature.

What does God desire? It is actually very simple. He wants you. All of you.” Joanna Weaver: Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World
