In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because
the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
Romans 8:26-27
Have you ever had a difficult time praying to God? Maybe you sat in a quiet place wanting to speak with God, but the words just would not come to you. Or maybe you were left speechless by something God had done in your life or the lives of those you love. Or maybe, you were to angry and frustrated with God that you gave God the silent treatment for a while. All of these things happen to all of God’s people and so Paul writes these encouraging words. If you don’t have the words to say, or if you are too angry to speak, the Spirit is there. The Spirit is the source of our creativity, inspiration and gives us hope. So friends, if you are having a hard time praying, for whatever reason try this prayer that was written by Augustine. Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.
